Like A Duck To Water

Dragonboating is awesome.
I am complete and utter poop at it. I really did not take to it like a duck to water. But it is so much fun.

Remember how I had a little panic last night because I didn’t know what to expect? It so wasn’t worth worrying about.

The team is fantastic – everyone is welcoming, encouraging and genuinely friendly.
The coach did not yell at me, but instead was helpful and constructive in his instruction.
We raced another (much better team) and were beating them by 3/4 of a boat for a while.

The weather was not nice (understatement) and there were crazy waves (more accurate) out in the harbour. We were told we would be staying in the sheltered lagoon to practice our technique (the weather was too dangerous for n00bs). But by the end of the practice, we were out amongst the waves, boat almost sinking, and soaked to the core.

That was the best part.

I haven’t had that much fun with team sport ever. Sorry girls from my past netball teams; asphalt and short skirts just don’t cut the mustard.

And, apart from my butt, I don’t actually hurt.
Whether that’s a sign of okay technique, or just not trying hard enough, I don’t know. But I’ll take it.

One pointer I do have for anyone looking to give it a go: pack a towel.

You will get very, very wet. You will need to get changed into dry clothes. To keep these clothes dry, you must dry yourself before putting them on.

I did not realise this until I had my wet gear in a pile on the floor like this:

This is not a good time to realise that a towel would be helpful.

Yes, I took that photo in a toilet stall while air drying my birthday suit. No judgement, please.
Just remember your gosh-darn towel!

Embracing New Experiences

I’m all set up for my first dragonboating training tomorrow. I’ve got my clothes packed neatly in my gym bag, and I’m starting to mentally prepare myself for what’s to come. Gah! What is to come?

I have new boat shoes – which are hideous, and surprisingly chunky, but at least they were cheap.

I have a bright pink shirt for good weather, and a bright orange long-sleeve shirt if it’s wet, so the coach won’t need to learn my name in order to yell constructive feedback at me when I’m doing it all wrong.

I have never even tried dragonboating before.
And I haven’t participated in team sports since high school (and even then it was a ‘social’ team, so winning was never a realistic goal).

I’m so close to messing myself it’s not funny.
(Did I mention that I’m trying to swear less, too?)

But regardless of the fear – the unknown – I’m excited. The kind of excited you get when you’re about to discover something for the first time.

Will I love it, or will I hate it?
Who knows. But I’m committed to this season and I’m totally in this thing 100%.

Crazy Week Indeed

Yes, yes, I’ve been a little quiet here over the last few days.  Can you blame me?  I had to take advantage of the weather while it’s been all sorts of amazing , and there are so many people to see that I missed over the Christmas/ New Year break!

Don’t worry though, I haven’t been wasting my time.  I’ve been keeping as busy(ish)…

…there’s been plenty of reading in the sun…
…trying not to get sunburnt… and failing.

I’ve been running with friends…
…which I loved, even though it turned into more of a gossip session than a workout…
… and the next day I tried my first pilates classes (wearing the peonut.com t-shirt, of course).

I’m still feeling the effects of Thursday’s class today.

I’ve been suckered into a friend’s dragonboating team…
…which is usually reserved for the fittest in any given workplace…
… and I’m terrified… and kind of excited (because there’s no way I’d get on the team at work…).

Enquiries have been made about opportunities to hurl myself out of a plane
… and I may be speeding back down to earth as soon as this weekend…
… even though I was just in the Wairarapa last weekend, for the Martinborough Fair, and I could have done it then.

And I have plenty to keep me busy coming up, too, but don’t worry about that just yet – I’ll make sure to share those goodies in due course.

What about you guys?
How is life keeping you busy?
And how are you keeping up?
