We really have to stop meeting like this.
I’d much rather sleep with you.
Love,
Amy
Getting a full night’s sleep has proved difficult over the last week or so. Why? Not entirely sure, though I expect it boils down to a couple of things (including a cold right-hand side of the bed while The Boyfriend’s on the other side of the planet for his BWA).
I’m little like an over-tired toddler at the moment – stroppy, pouty, and completely unwilling to surrender to the midday nap.
After several nights of staring at the ceiling and reciting the chorus of Call Me Maybe in my head over and over (and over, and over, and over… you get the point) I’ve turned into something resembling this:
Bad taste, I know. Sorry.
So instead of dragging my heels and making those around me quiver in fear I’ve turned to the internet to help me fix the situation. Enter, my new sleep encouraging routine:
- Go to bed every night at the same time (for me this will be 10pm), and wake up every morning at the same time (6am).
- Do not hit the snooze button under any circumstance. Which, as we’ve already established is not something I’m particularly good at.
- No caffeine after 4pm.
- Have a Sweet Dreams tea each night before bed.
- Do not use any computers, etc, in bed. The bed is for sleeping, not reading/chatting/cute dog pictures.
- Exercise everyday (outside where possible). This is something I’ve been trying to do anyway, but have been struggling with because I’m just. so. tired. Tough bikkies, Amy. You’re getting off your butt today regardless.
Have you ever been in this situation? How did you deal with it?
Any tips? Any pointers?

I’m empathetic as my wife never seems to get a good night sleep. But I sleep like a brick regardless. Hope it comes good. Kim*

I was having trouble falling back to sleep after getting up to feed my son in the night. I started thinking and then could not shut my mind off, I’d be up for 3 or 4 hours most nights. It totally sucked!
A naturopath recommended GSF Complex. I take one the morning with my breakfast and one with dinner…been falling back to sleep almost immediately after being up. No more up all night thinking
Maybe you want to give it a try.
Good luck!
Definitely sounds like its worth looking into, thanks!
I just heard a news piece about getting kids ready for back to school. The suggestion was, an hour before bed, all electronics get turned off, clothes are ready for the next day, lunch is packed, etc. I might need to try that starting next week. For now, sometimes writing before bed helps – it lets me get all those thoughts out of my head so they don’t keep me up. I also looked at my food habits and made healthier choices (moving away from highly processed foods). Good luck!! ~Yuri
I’ve had insomnia for decades. I only sleep about 5 hours per night, which I don’t really mind – I can get a lot of stuff done when everyone else is sleeping.
The only thing EVER that made me sleep more than 5 hours? Weight lifting. Work out your legs because they are your biggest muscle group. The physical exertion will knock you out cold. Plus, your legs will get toned.
Here are two leg workouts you can try:
