Couch to 5k: End of Week Two

"Running 3d Character" by David Castillo DominiciAs of this morning, I’ve completed week two of the Couch to 5K programme, and it feels like I’m starting to make progress.

Though, my thighs still jiggle as I run.

Unlike week one, this week didn’t feel “too easy”.  It was a little closer to “just right”.  Or rather…

Day 1:  “&(*@ ! This was a bit of a jump from last week
Day 2: Okay, yeah, I’m feeling it…
Day 3: This is awesome.  Need to keep it up for next week

Today I was able to get 3.6km in the 32 minute session on the treadmill.  I felt happy, healthy and able to breathe and/or walk afterwards.  This has to be a first for me.  The last time I went that far in half an hour I was beetroot-red with jelly-legs (a little like I get on the rowing machine).

I could probably repeat week two and get a little more out of it, but I feel like I’d be able to handle heading into week three – so I will.

See ya soon, week three!

  1. For me the jumps to week 2 and 3 were the worst. But I was also running outside and the allergens were kicking up so I couldn’t breath. At this point (week 8) it’s not any different from week to week. Adding 2-3 minutes to the run is easy. I’m working on increasing speed going forward.

    • Week 8 – you’re almost done! Good on you :)

I’m looking forward to getting there and being able to run for much longer periods. At the moment running for less than 2 minutes at a time is frustrating!

Do you find that running outside it’s also harder to know exactly how fast/hard you’re going? I’ve preferred running outside, but I found it really hard to know exactly what I was doing…

      • Actually, the challenge is I have asthma. I was fine in late winter here, but then the allergens skyrocketed and it felt like running in sand in Denver. I couldn’t breathe. However, I’m learning to keep my pace more consistent thanks to the treadmill which is good. And I’m protecting my lungs from the horrible Houston air. I look forward to leaving here, even if it means living at a higher elevation because I will have nicer places to run and hopefully cleaner air.

What helps for pacing is the right playlist. When I started I was listening to an album ‘Run to Cadence with the US Women Marines’. It helped me stay in the right mindset. However, the pace is a bit too slow for how I run now so I had to find a new playlist. I’m still experimenting. Once you know your bbm you can use jog.fm to search for songs at that temp, just so you know. :-)
