All Dressed Up

Right-oh!  I’m all dressed up to head out of the house and to a friend’s engagement party (again with the question - when did we get so old?!).  Got the pretty new clothes – ones I would have never worn six months ago, including the skinny jeans I bought a couple of weeks ago.   Got the red bull vodka – in a wine glass to appear classy.  And I’ve got the Chanel No.5 (like a good girl should).

The one thing I don’t have?  A warm jacket fitting of the occasion.  Or, a nice, warm, jacket that fits and I can wear into the city on such a cold night.  Because it’s cold.  Not lose-a-limb cold, because we don’t get that here, but it’s cold cold.  Like purple fingers cold.  And I think I’ll probably venture out in a (thick-ish) red cotton coat I bought for the Wellington summer.   Oh boy.

It doesn’t snow in Wellington.  Well, it did last year.  But that was the exception (and no one was able to handle it).

It should snow in Wellington.
Why?  My alcohol blanket’s no where warm enough for this, and I may as well get cute pictures.  (Snow!)

Things They Never Told Me (About Running)

There are quite a few things that no one ever told me before I started running.  But the idea of discovering is the whole reason we try something new – to learn.  To find the good, and the bad.

To live it.  To breathe it.
It’s for the experience, right?

Nevertheless, here are some of the things I learned for myself:

  • Runny noses
I don’t know about everyone else, but my nose runs like crazy on half the runs I do.  My nose decides that it, too, wants to get running.  Cheesy, I know.  But it does.
  • Wedgies
Regardless of the underwear (or pants) that I choose to wear, I always get a wedgie.  Always.  My underwear rides up so high that I can almost taste them.  Oh, the imagery!  I’ve given up fighting them now.  So you can see the bunching through my tights?  Look away!  Can’t touch this! (Wish I had an appropriate MC Hammer sound clip right now)
  • Boobs
Okay, I knew this already.  And I had started with good equipment.  But nothing truly prepares you for high impact training like high impact training.  Bounce, bounce, bounce!  Ladies, buy a good bra!  Then buy a couple more.
  • Getting lost in your thoughts
This is why I run.  I run to think.  It’s something I found when I was walking home, too.  Once you get into the swing of things, the thinking just happens.  It flows easily and you get lost in whatever train of thought takes your fancy.  Your feet just know what to do.  And apparently, my form’s better when my head’s in the clouds.
  • Lungs!
Full of air, they power you through.  They hurt.  But they feel amazing when you stop.  Thinking about my breathing is one of the few things that pull me out of the clouds to concentrate on my running.  And it’s such a good way to see how your fitness is improving.  I just have to compare the feeling in my lungs after week one of the Couch to 5K programme with the way I feel now, in the midst of my fourth week, to get the warm fuzzies that with accomplishment!
  • Competition
Running is competitive.  The sport of it is to run races.  Races are to see who is fastest.  A competition.  But even if you’re not training to run races – if you run to run and not to win shiny medals or set a personal best – there’s still something that ticks over when another runner pops up in the vicinity.  Generally, I don’t compete in something unless I know I’m in with a chance.  But watch out if you’re on the treadmill next to me tomorrow.
  • Treadmill politics
I guess this will be a hard one to distinguish from the ‘competition’ point above.  Unless you’ve been in a similar situation it might be hard to see the differences.  But good luck if you’re the only walker on the treadmills and there’s a crowd waiting.  Similarly, if you’re doing interval training (like I do) and someone’s looking to run a billion gazillion kilometres atexactly 10.3km/hr, you best be wearing some thick skin.  Then again, it could be the whole women’s only aspect of my recent gym experience.

But that’s enough about me -
What did you find when you started running (or even just exercising in general) ?

Couch to 5K: Progress Update

The weekend flew by without a “Week Three” summary post – why?  Because Saturday wasn’t spent anywhere near the treadmill.  Or outside, at all.

Instead, Week Three wrapped up yesterday with little pomp and fanfare.  Very little fuss.  Kind of the opposite to how it started.  Except perhaps more oxygen.

Week Four started today.  It was very… sweaty.

And, unexpectedly, the step up into Week Four wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.  3 runs in a session: 4 minutes, 6 minutes, 4 minutes, with walks in between.

It felt good!  I left the gym high as a kite!  And very red.  But high!

Endorphins!  I love ye!
(Almost as much as chocolate)

2012 Wellington Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10km

Amy's race number (Adidas 10km)

By Jove, I did it.

Falling asleep last night, I could hear the rain pouring and the wind howling around our house.  Waking up (still a little hungover), it didn’t look much better.  But we went anyway!

By the time the race started, the weather was looking up and actually ended up being pretty good for a walk – cool, no rain and little wind (even along the waterfront).

I walked with a colleague and we aimed for 90 minutes from start to finish.  According to the race clock as we came to the finish line we crossed at about 88- 89 minutes, and the Map My Run app tells me we maintained a relatively constant pace the whole time.  Sweet.

It was a great collection of people – from serious athletes to protesters in chicken suits.  We saw a lot of people – the course doubled back after 5km – and I can honestly say we were beaten by five chickens, a handful of balding men in tutus and half the children in the city.

Regardless, it feels good.
I finished.  I did it!

And the free stuff is pretty awesome.  Work branded running singlets, all the fruit you can eat, and a towel.  I cannot tell you how excited I was to receive a towel.   New gym towel?  Think they’ll believe I ran the Wellington Marathon?

Of course they will.

There’s No Place Like Home

I don’t drink. I don’t not drink. It’s probably better to say that I don’t drink often. Not to get drunk.

So, with this (and the walk tomorrow) in mind, I went along to a co-worker’s leaving dinner intending to leave around midnight…

…And stumbled out of my taxi about 5am with the taste of butterscotch schnapps at the back of my throat.

Not my finest moment.

Turns out today was a bit of a waste of a Saturday. I fell out of bed about dinner time and have now settled in for an evening of Game of Thrones before an early night. Possibly still a little drunk, 15 hours on.

So please excuse the mindless post.
But tell me, when did I get so old?

Retail Therapy

Having done a lot (and talked to many people) over the last 8 hours, you can imagine the shock and rush of absolute embarrassment when I saw the giant clump of spinach in my front teeth. From lunch.

I have a very tooth-y smile. When I smile my whole face folds itself away and the teeth come out for show. And I like my job, I like the gym, and I like coming home to The Boyfriend. I’ve smiled a lot. With colleges, fellow gym members, and various strangers.

Enter: retail therapy. Of the online kind.
I have set the goal of treating myself to some new workout gear, have I not?
Perfect excuse!

Except, I have a wee problem. I have no idea what to buy. Can you help me out?

What I need: nothing really comes to mind (workout bottoms still fit for now, and I can wear my tops baggy).
What I have: I’ve already invested in a couple of pairs of trainers, including one especially for running. I’ve also got an exercise/yoga mat, Swiss ball and 1kg & 2kg dumbbells. Sports bras are currently kicking butt, too.
Budget: up to NZ$100 (about US$75-80). I might be able to spend a little more if it’s a real investment, but it will take a lot of convincing.

So what are some suggestions?
I’m not overly fussed whether it’s clothing or equipment, as long as it is something I will actually use!

Below are some pictures of gear that have been making my hand inch closer and closer to the purse this evening:
